Wheel throwing is the dynamic process of using a potter’s wheel to shape clay into functional or artistic forms. Students will learn to create pieces like: • Bowls • Cups • Vases • Plates • Small jars or planters This class is a hands-on, immersive introduction to the most iconic form of pottery—and it's perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to develop a foundational wheel skillset. What You'll Learn 1. Clay Prep • Wedging clay to remove air bubbles and ensure uniform consistency • Learning the importance of moisture and texture before wheel work 2. Centering Clay • One of the most essential skills in wheel throwing • Students learn to center a lump of clay on a spinning wheel to form a stable, symmetrical base 3. Opening & Pulling • Creating the initial hole in the center of the clay • Pulling the clay up into walls while keeping the form balanced • Making cups, bowls, and other vessels 4. Shaping & Refining • Using fingers and tools (like ribs and sponges) to perfect the piece’s shape • Learning to thin or thicken walls, flare rims, and create intentional curves 5. Trimming & Finishing • Once the piece is leather-hard, students trim the base and add details like foot rings • Pieces are dried and prepared for bisque firing 6.
